Aim of Assessment: This assessment task will develop your knowledge of the function and importance of healthy body systems in an adult. It focuses on the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, aspects that maintain a healthy
respiratory system as well as factors associated with changes in this system. Skills being developed are
researching, writing, referencing and presenting information in a clear and concise written format. This task
aims to develop an understanding of the respiratory system and the importance of maintaining a healthy body.
The following short answer questions are to be answered.
Q1. Describe the mechanics of inspiration and expiration in a resting person. (270 words)
Q2. Discuss how lung volumes change in response to vigorous breathing (forced inspiration and expiration) and
what additional muscles will be used to ensure these volumes are met. (270 words)
Q3. Describe any four normal age-related changes to the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system in
healthy elderly adults (over 65 years) No smoking. (270 words)
Q4. Describe three effects long term exercise has in maintaining a healthy respiratory system. (180 words)
